Shot Timer PRO for the iPhone works reasonably well on an iPhone 3. Not perfect, but certainly better than the difference between a $10 app and a $130 range timer. It is, however, HORRIBLE on an iPhone 4. The noise-canceling microphones on the newer iPhones completely break the detection, and on a newer phone the app is lucky to record even half of your shots. However, the mic causes the same problems in other apps of the same type, too, so that’s not really a knock on Shot Timer PRO.

I also got a chance to try out Shot Timer, by Surefire, for the iPhone. It’s available for free on the app store. I haven’t had the opportunity to test it under live fire, but it was terrible for dry-fire exercises. They just released an update to the app a few days ago, which they report fixes a lot of the shot detection on the iPhone 4 (with new calibrations for the microphone).

I still have an iPhone 3g, and the update is a mixed blessing on that phone. The detection of dry-fire is a lot better, but in order to get it to work they just cranked the sensitivity up. In fact, the sensitivity is now so high that the start buzzer (made by the app itself) is detected a shot in 100% of the strings I tried.

It’s nice to see a free app that doesn’t have any restrictions (many other free apps limit you to recording six shots, for example), but this one doesn’t work as well as I was hoping. Still looking for just the right fit.
